 Our school vision is

"To give our children the widest range of experiences so that they can reach and expand their potential, and to prepare them to become productive, responsible, ethical, creative and compassionate members of society."

We are delighted to introduce our new whole-school curriculum, launched in September 2020, and designed to inspire and excite.

Gorseybrigg Primary School’s curriculum is:

  • Rich in knowledge and vocabulary
  • Truly skills progressive
  • A preparation for our children’s adult lives in the 21st century
  • Focussed on books and reading.

Knowledge and vocabulary

‘We believe that our children should have the opportunity to study areas of the curriculum in greater depth and we want them to produce exceptional outcomes.’ Lear

  • Our identified topics are explored in depth over a whole term. Geography and Design Technology are the foci of the autumn term; History is the spring term theme and we immerse the children in the Creative Arts during the summer.
  • We teach challenging and technical vocabulary directly with the expectation that children will own these words in their discussions and writing. Every year, children will return to key vocabulary and ideas so that they build an internal construct rich in meaning.
  • We are committed to providing children with access to the very best cultural resources – books, works of art, music – and to offer a rich and varied cultural experience.

Skills

‘Don’t wish for fewer problems.  Wish for more skills.’ Rohn

  • Children are given time, through our termly model, to focus on and embed their skills in every subject.
  • Our skill mapping and cumulative model ensures children are able to build on skills learned in previous years.

Preparation for life

‘In a gentle way, you can shake the world.’ Gandhi

  • Our curriculum allows children to engage with current issues and real world problems in an age appropriate way.
  • The content we teach is filtered through big ideas (such as truth, adversity, courage, individuality, conformity) so children can develop their sense of ethics and worldview.
  • Every topic has a relevant link (such as environmental awareness, poverty, sense of place) so that it is relevant for our children in our local, national and worldwide community.

Reading at the heart

‘There is no substitute for books in the life of a child.’ Chase

We put reading at the heart of everything we teach.  Our taught curriculum is rich with fiction and non-fiction from a range of eras and cultures.  Our library is central to the life of the school and every class has weekly sessions with the aim of supporting children to develop their own reading identities and immerse themselves in stories and words.
